We are looking forward to an exciting and fun year. Band is a full-year class because we have so much great music to learn and play.  Centennial is the only school with only 7th and 8th graders to consistently have two bands invited to perform at the State Festival. Our goal this year is to get both bands back to the State Festival and to continue to improve their level of performance.

Students in the Beginning Band and Orchestra are a very important part of our band program as they prepare to be a part of these great programs moving forward. Our goal is for each student to be a successful musician and for every ensemble to sound great as a group. Band, taught by Mr. Werner, gives you the opportunity to learn multiple brass, woodwind or percussion instruments. Orchestra at CMS is taught by Mr. Voght and is where you'll learn instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and bass.

Band Supply List:

• Flute: Swab (can be a small, thin rag about 1 ft by 1 ft).
• Clarinet: 3-5 working reeds in instrument case at all times: Beginning Band: strength 2.5 (Mitchell Lurie or Rico Royal brands); Concert Band and Symphonic Band: strength 3.0 (Mitchell Lurie or Rico Royal brands); Wind Symphony: strength 2.5 Vandoren brand; swab, cork grease.
• Oboe: 2-3 working reeds in instrument case at all times (cycle through reeds to keep them working longer), small container to soak reeds, swab.
• Bassoon: 2-3 working reeds (Jones brand recommended) in instrument case at all times (cycle through reeds to keep them working longer), small container to soak reeds.
• Saxophone: 3-5 working reeds in instrument case at all times: Beginning Band: strength 2.5 (Mitchell Lurie or Rico Royal brands); Concert Band and Symphonic Band: strength 3.0 (Mitchell Lurie or Rico Royal brands); Wind Symphony: strength 2.5 Vandoren brand; swab, cork grease.
• French Horn: Rotary valve oil, slide grease, small rag for cleaning.
• Trumpet: Synthetic valve oil, slide grease, small rag for cleaning.
• Trombone: Slide cream (not oil) and small spray bottle that fits in case or Slide-O-Mix, slide grease, small rag for cleaning.
• Euphonium/Tuba: Synthetic valve oil, slide grease, small rag for cleaning.
• Concert Snare Drum Sticks Must be Vic Firth SD-2 Bolero
• • Practice Pad
  • Bell Kit with rubber mallets

  Note: Practice Pad, Bell Kit, sticks, and mallets are often sold as a set. These items are used for practice purposes so there is no need to purchase an extremely expensive kit. Often, you can find the best deals on Amazon or other online source by searching for "bell kit". The sticks in these sets sometimes are not adequate, but you can easily buy the Vic Firth SD-2 Bolero drumsticks for not very much.

 Parents, this year your child can begin playing a musical instrument in the Centennial Middle Band and Orchestra programs. When he or she brings home an instrument for the first time, it is more than just an exciting day. It is perhaps one of the greatest opportunities in your child's life thus far. There are not many subjects taught in school where your children can have fun, learn a beautiful artform, and develop life skills needed to be successful beyond their school career.
